Nuclear Sector - Humanicks.jpg

Humanicks have many years of experience supporting high consequence Nuclear Projects. Be that new build or substantiating existing facilities. We can deploy Human Factors, Safety Assurance and Engineering capability to both defence and power sectors. We work as a team so our clients get a specialist consultant backed up by our other specialists.

Our Human Factors consultants are experienced in supporting Engineering and Assurance in the design of new nuclear facilities and equipment, including human error identification and quantification, qualitative substantiation of human based safety claims. We also provide solutions to ergonomic design issues of nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities.

Our Safety Assurance consultants have many years of experience in nuclear defence, working at establishments in Devon and Berkshire most recently. We can supply expertise in Safety Case production and contribution through all stages of design. They are highly experienced in HAZOPs, HAZIDs, HAZANs, Safety Case Modifications & Concessions, deterministic & probabilistic safety assessment, dose consequence calculation, ALARP justification.

Our Engineering consultants are currently coordinating the technical delivery of high integrity mechanical handling and containment equipment on an international nuclear collaboration project. They work from interpretation of user requirements and authoring of tender documentation (Scopes of Work and Technical Requirement Specifications), through to manufacture and commissioning of the equipment.  Throughout, they are responsible for coordinating design development and delivery of supporting documentation, ensuring designs are compliant with design standards and robustly substantiated.

Most importantly, Humanicks has the diverse skill set to ensure our clients are able to meet the Licencing Conditions of the Office of Nuclear Regulation.

Past projects include:

  • Ministry of Defence (MoD) – Human Factors contributions to safety cases and facility design of two major new build projects, including equipment trials, anthropometric assessments, HAZOPS/HAZIDS, control room design, task design, training needs analysis, human error identification and quantification

  • MoD - Responsible for the management and production of the Probabilistic Safety Assessment for a large new build nuclear facility

  • MoD – Human Factors Lead, for the UK, on the HF work package to a new hydrodynamic test facility to meet a Treaty between the UK and France

  • MoD – Peer Review of HF substantiation of an existing facility

  • 9 Dock Maintenance Outage - provide safety advice and deliver a large number of safety case modifications in support of dock outage upgrades and remedial works

  • 9 Dock Design & Safety Management Team - provide expert safety support to the 9 Dock Facility Design and Safety Manager during the Deep Maintenance Period of a Vanguard Class Submarine

  • Rolls Royce Marine - provide specialist technical safety related and general Submarine Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) engineering advice in support of the development of the Next Generation Nuclear Power Plant (NGNPP) safety case

  • Magnox Ltd. Oldbury Operations Shift Transition Project - Review, regrouping, rerouting and reprioritisation of safety critical alarms, revision of handbook and site documents

  • AGR Fleet Fuel Route -

    • Heysham 2/ Torness PSA update

    • Engineering Change Review. Responsible for reviewing Heysham 2/Torness Engineering Change (EC) reports

    • Hartlepool Control Rod SSR (equivalent to PRS). Responsible for report production involving the review of all relevant reports, to determine if any of the modifications described undermined the intended control system status

Senior Engineering Manager at Nuclear Technologies:

“It has been a pleasure working with Nick over the past year during the design phase of our project for a large vessel, associated systems and handling equipment. Nick provided guidance to, and evaluation and presentation of, the HF aspects of the design at numerous reviews using his experience and expertise ensuring proportionality and pragmatism.”
