AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL

There can be few roles that require such a high level of concentration, with immediate effects on safety and business than that of an Air Traffic Controller (ATCO). Here at Humanicks we recognise the increasing IT support supplied to ATCOs, and how this changes the nature of the job, coupled with a relentless need to fill capacity. While we recognise that we are not made of the right stuff to be ATCOs, we have worked with them extensively to improve safety, improve situational awareness, reduce stress and hone training.

Past projects include:

  • NATS - iFACTS: Safety and Human Performance assessment of this ATCO decision support system

    • managed the operational risk assessment HAZOPs based on Operational Sequence Diagrams

    • created safety requirements from allocation of function principles

    • resolved the safety requirements to mitigate the hazards

    • used validation testing to create safety assurance arguments for the project’s safety case

    • amended the HMI design, created and negotiated training objectives, and assisted in writing the controllers procedures in both normal operations and emergencies

  • Indra - Assessed the validity of Terminal Control using electronic flight strips

  • SESAR - Assessed the Flexible and Dynamic use of Wake Turbulence Separation displays for approach controllers

Human Factors Engineer, NATS | EngD C.ErgHF MCIEHF MIET Eur.Erg:

“Nick Shorter is a talented and experienced Human Factors Consultant. I have known Nick from when he worked at NATS, the UK Air Navigation Service Provider. We worked together on several complex high profile and fast paced projects, where he calmly delivered first class HF expertise. Nick impressed me with the way he hit the ground running and rapidly contributed to a complex system validation activity. I believe his rich and extensive background provides a unique perspective to challenging projects, he is an asset in any team. I would recommend Nick for any safety-critical HF contract.”
